Haddar Macdasi is an Israeli painter whose work centers on the human figure. Working primarily in large-scale watercolor and ink on paper, he explores the moment in which an image begins to emerge from washes, marks and open space.
Macdasi is interested not only in the finished image, but in the threshold at which marks begin to become legible as a body. This interest goes back to an early fascination with watching a drawing reveal itself: the instant when separate lines and shapes suddenly connect and a figure appears.
In the recent watercolors, that search becomes physical. Scale, speed and bodily movement are part of the painting process. Rather than beginning with detail, he works through large masses, dark and light, and the minimum visual information needed to establish the pose and presence of the model.
Areas left unresolved are not treated as absence. They keep the image open and allow the viewer to participate in the same act of recognition that guides the painting itself. The work remains balanced between description and uncertainty: enough information for the body to become present, but not so much that the process of discovery disappears.
